NEWS ITEM PART III

Hello there, everyone! We'll talk about the last part of the news item at this meeting. Read carefully and thoroughly. ✅✅✅

Getting to Know the News

An article or a short paragraph that offers the most recent (updated and up to date) information on noteworthy or essential daily events where the information is worthy and important to be reported is known as a news item.

The Purpose of the News Item

The objective of news item text is to inform readers or listeners about important or newsworthy events that occur on a daily basis.

Features of a News Item

  • In the title, there is a brief summary of the story.
  • Making use of action verbs
  • Explaining current events in the past tense
  • Using verbs to express yourself
  • Adverbs are used to describe time, place, and style.

♢  Characteristics of Structure and Language

The linguistic structure of news item text is divided into three parts:

1. Participate in activities.

This section is often known as "breaking news." This is the portion that tells or contains information about the main event or occurrence, usually in the form of a summary

2. Events in the background

This section, sometimes known as Elaboration, describes the backdrop of the event or occurrence, including who was involved and where the incident occurred.

3. The source

The source, which includes comments, witnesses to events, expert opinions, and other information about the events or events recorded, is the final section.

There are linguistic qualities in each genre of text in English that distinguish it from others. The most noticeable feature of news item text its short and sweet language. Other text news item include the following language characteristics:

~ The headline contains only a few words of information.
~ Concentrate on a certain incident.
~ Saying verbs, such as reported, quoted, spoke, preached, and so on, are used by the dominant.
~ Use action verbs, which are verbs that show activity, as much as possible.
~ Use auxiliary verbs to show time and place frequently.

Format in News Item

  • Concentrate on the main point. Allowing long-winded writing to exclude a crucial component of a news story is not a good idea. Make an effort to write in clear, correct, and easy-to-understand English.
  • Typically, quotes from sources are used. Words like "informed," "told," "reported," "he stated," and others come to mind.
  • Make it a habit to start each sentence with the name of the location where an event takes place. For example, Bekasi, Jakarta, and other cities in Indonesia.
  • Usually, the grammar used in writing news is past tense because the news usually has already happened. If it is still ongoing, you can write it in the present tense.
  • Try to write short, concise, and clear, especially in the headline.

I'll present some samples of news items at the second meeting of news items. Please read the following information.

ROCHESTER, Minn., Dec. 16 (UPI) — A Minnesota bank robber interrupted a news broadcast about his own crime when he returned to the scene Tuesday.
Video shows KIMT News reporter Adam Sallet reporting on a series of robberies from outside Sterling State bank in Rochester as an employee runs out and points to the robber off camera.
“This is live TV folks,” Sallet said before stepping away from the broadcast to call police.
The feed then cut back to the news anchor who assured the audience that the event was not planned.
Sallet tweeted later in the day that the suspect had been caught.

Moscow – A Russian journalist has uncovered evidence of another Soviet nuclear catastrophe, which killed 10 sailors and contaminated an entire town.
Yelena Vazrshavskya is the first journalist to speak to people who witnessed the explosion of a nuclear submarine at the naval base of shkotovo – 22 near Vladivostock.
The accident, which occurred 13 months before the Chernobyl disaster, spread radioactive fall-out over the base and nearby town, but was covered  up by officials of the Soviet Union. Residents were told the explosion in the reactor of the Victor-class submarine during a refit had been a ‘thermal’ and not a nuclear explosion. And those involved in the clean up operation to remove more than 600 tones of contaminated material were sworn to secrecy.
A board of investigators was later to describe it as the worst accident in the history of the Soviet Navy.

George Clooney has signed on to direct and star in “Good Morning, Midnight” for Netflix. It will be his first project with the streaming service.

Clooney and Smokehouse Pictures’ Grant Heslov will produce the adaptation of Lily Brooks-Dalton’s novel, “which follows a lonely scientist in the Arctic, as he races to make contact with the crew of a spacecraft as they try to return home to Earth,” according to a description from Netflix.

“Grant and I couldn’t be more excited to be involved with this incredible project,” Clooney told Variety. “Mark is a writer we’ve long admired and his script is haunting. We’re thrilled to be working with our friends at Netflix as well.”

The story is a sci-fi thriller, and was named one of the best books of 2017 by the Chicago Review of Books. Clooney will play the lead scientist. Scott Stuber, head of Netflix’s film division, said: “Having known and worked with George for over two decades, I can’t think of anyone better to bring this amazing story to life. The book is powerful and moving, and Mark’s adaptation is beautifully written. At its core, this is a story about human nature, and one that I know our global audiences will fall in love with, just like I did when I read it.”

Clooney recently executive produced, appeared in, and directed a few episodes of Hulu’s “Catch-22.” The film, which does not yet have a title, will begin production in October.

EXPLANATION TEXT PART II

 PRICILLA AUDREY ANDREW (28)

XII IPS 1

Good morning dear, back again on my blog. Today we will continue the Explanation Text material. Check out the following explanation. In this part II, I will give some examples of Explanation Text.

General Statement

We all know that tsunamis are a series of destructive waves and powerful. Tsunami is the deadliest wave because the wave speed is incredibly fast. But do you know how a tsunami can happens?

Explanation

Tsunami originated from Japan, “tsu” meaning harbor and “nami” meaning wave. They are normally caused by landslides, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions in, or close to an ocean. After some sort of underwater disturbance, this causes energy to rise up to sea level pushing the water high into the air. Gravity kicks in and pulls it down again and then consequently causing the water to filter out into many different directions.

When a tsunami begins to approach the shore the energy in the wave is compressed. As a result, the water is pushed up into the wave, resulting in a powerful tsunami. If the trough hits the shoreline first, it then causes the tide to drastically retreat.

Conclusion

So, tsunamis happen because of natural disasters such as earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. People who live near the shoreline have to be careful because they are threatened by tsunamis whenever there is an earthquake.

Why Eiffel Tower Was Built

If we talk about the Wonders of the World buildings, then we will see Eiffel Tower as one of them. However many of us do not know the tower’s past history on why it was build. Everything has the reasonable background, especially for the tower which is to be one of the most recognized buildings in the world.

Primarily, the Eiffel Tower was built for the World Exhibition. It was called Paris Exposition in 1889. The exhibition was organized to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the French Revolution. The purpose of building Eiffel Tower in such structure was to show to the world France’s advancement of technology and beauty. The Eiffel Tower was designed by Gustave Eiffel. It seemed that then the name of the tower was derived from the designer’s last name, “Eiffel”.

Another reason on why the tower was built was for scientific progress. Although few realized it, the Eiffel Tower would become the prominent structure in terms of science and technology. Many experiment with temperature, pressure and pendulums were performed atop the unique famous building. Additionally the Eiffel Tower was used for radio transmission tower. Many experiments were conducted atop the Eiffel Tower for radio transmission advancement. Once the Eiffel Tower was proposed to be demolished but it was spared because the tower had the promising future as a radio tower.

Mammatus Clouds

Mammatus comes from the Latin mamma which translates to “udder” or “breast”. Their striking appearance is most visible when the sun is low in the sky and their pouches are framed by the sunlight. This supplementary feature is a firm favourite with many meteorologists as well as cloud and photography enthusiasts.

Mammatus clouds are some of the most unusual and distinctive clouds formations with a series of bulges or pouches emerging from the base of a cloud. The shape of mammatus formations can vary widely; from the classic protruding shape, to a more elongated tube hanging from the cloud above.

Mammatus clouds are usually formed in association with large cumulonimbus clouds. Typically, turbulence within the cumulonimbus cloud will cause mammatus to form, especially on the underside of the projecting anvil as it rapidly descends to lower levels. This reverses the usual cloud-forming process of upward growth, making for an uneven cloud base.

Mammatus often forms in association with Cumulonimbus clouds, which in turn bring thunderstorms due to their huge mass of unstable air. Mammatus cloud generally form in the most unstable cumulonimbus, meaning that there is also a chance of hail, heavy rain and lightning in the vicinity, and if the air is cold enough during winter they can produce snow. Sometimes mammatus may form on other cloud types which produce no rain, though this is far less common.

Mammatus usually form on the base of a cumulonimbus anvil, but they have also been sighted to form on other cloud types, such as stratocumulus, altostratus and altocumulus. Mammatus have also been observed to form on the underside of volcanic ash clouds.

CAPTION TEXT PART III

The word caption in English when translated into Indonesian is to interpret or provide a description of an image or video that will be posted in an article to emphasize article content, essay reports, and so on. The function of the caption is to provide an explanation or description to the reader of the article about the intent of your post. When writing an essay or article and using a caption in our writing, we will provide a more understandable explanation for the reader about the article or essay that we make. In addition to the caption function to explain the purpose of our writing in an article or essay, another function of the caption is of course so that the material we provide or write is more understood by the reader because we provide examples that match the written material we provide.

Text Caption in English learning material can be interpreted as a text that explains the meaning of an image that is displayed. In general, the images displayed are given meaningful captions, ranging from funny, wise to news and informative. In this paper, we will discuss examples of captions on text news items.

🎈Types of Captions in English

There are several types of captions in English in text news items. Where the caption is used to explain or provide more information about an image or can also beautify the image. Below are some types of captions:

1. Identification Bar

In this type of caption, only mentions who is in the picture.

2. Cutline

This type of caption says who is in the picture and what that person is doing.

3. Summary

This type of caption contains a more complete explanation of the people in the picture, what they did, when it happened, and why they did it.

4. Expanded

The form of this type of caption is more complete than the summary and this type of caption contains various events and their quotes.

5. Group Identification

This type of caption is the same as the type of identification bar caption except that this type is used if the image contains more than one person.

6. Quotes

This type of caption contains quotes from someone's words related to the displayed image.

🎈 Procedure for Writing Captions in English

From the examples of captions above, of course, it can be seen that writing captions in English is not arbitrary. There are several ways to write the caption. According to nwscholasticpress there are several things that need to be considered in writing a good caption that can be used as a complementary image, the procedure is as follows:

In writing captions in English, it is not necessary to use article words such as a, an, or the. As much as possible use the simple Present Tenses so that the picture can be described.

  • The information provided to the reader is not obtained just by looking at the picture.
  • The text in the caption is only to complete the photo, not to replace the photo.
  • At the time of writing text captions do not need to start with a name.
  • When writing a text caption that shows an individual, you can use the word "from left", not "from left to right".
  • When writing text in the caption, there is no need to write clear words, such as "Above" and "Pictured here".
  • In mentioning the name in the caption, if the name is really important.
  • Writing a good caption in English can start with several variations of the words below:

  1. Prepositional phrases
  2. Infinitive – phrases
  3. Participial phrases
  4. Adjective phrases
  5. Questions
  6. Exclamations

🎈 How to Write Caption Text

There are some tips on how to write a good caption text. Here is how to write caption text.

1. Accuracy

You have to know what you want to say. Do not write down or make judgments about the mood or mood of the people in the picture.Actually you can just write the emotion or mood on the subject in the picture, but you have to confirm it directly at the source. Also pay attention to the actions of the subject or those around the subject.

2. Don't Be Too Real

Avoid phrases that tell the reader about very obvious actions, such as shaking hands, looking, gestures, chatting, and so on. This, of course, can be seen by the readers. Caption text that is too real like, 'Director A and Director B shake hands', or 'The principal of SMA J is looking at the computer pointed to by teacher B'.

3. Avoid Cliches

Avoid clichés or trite words. Avoid using words that describe actions with feelings, such as excited, rejoicing, jumping with joy, clapping happily, and so on.

4. Showing the Subject of the Photo

Don't show the subject of the photo in a way that talks to the subject like "Hey Joe, what are you doing in front of that building?" "Hey Jane, where are you right now?" and so forth.

5. Language Style

Actually, the style of language can be adjusted to the picture shown. For example, a funny style photo can be given a funny caption text too. Photos that are serious in style or such as tables and graphs must be given a serious caption as well.

6. Identification

Identify all clearly visible people in an image. If the photo or image contains four or more people and is not a group portrait, individual identification is not required, unless one or two people are clearly the center of attention in the photo.
