CAPTION TEXT PART III

 


The word caption in English when translated into Indonesian is to interpret or provide a description of an image or video that will be posted in an article to emphasize article content, essay reports, and so on. The function of the caption is to provide an explanation or description to the reader of the article about the intent of your post. When writing an essay or article and using a caption in our writing, we will provide a more understandable explanation for the reader about the article or essay that we make. In addition to the caption function to explain the purpose of our writing in an article or essay, another function of the caption is of course so that the material we provide or write is more understood by the reader because we provide examples that match the written material we provide.

Text Caption in English learning material can be interpreted as a text that explains the meaning of an image that is displayed. In general, the images displayed are given meaningful captions, ranging from funny, wise to news and informative. In this paper, we will discuss examples of captions on text news items.

There are several types of captions in English in text news items. Where the caption is used to explain or provide more information about an image or can also beautify the image. Below are some types of captions:

1. Identification Bar

In this type of caption, only mentions who is in the picture.

2. Cutline

This type of caption says who is in the picture and what that person is doing.

3. Summary

This type of caption contains a more complete explanation of the people in the picture, what they did, when it happened, and why they did it.

4. Expanded

The form of this type of caption is more complete than the summary and this type of caption contains various events and their quotes.

5. Group Identification

This type of caption is the same as the type of identification bar caption except that this type is used if the image contains more than one person.

6. Quotes

This type of caption contains quotes from someone's words related to the displayed image.



🎈 Procedure for Writing Captions in English

From the examples of captions above, of course, it can be seen that writing captions in English is not arbitrary. There are several ways to write the caption. In writing captions in English, it is not necessary to use article words such as a, an, or the. As much as possible use the simple Present Tenses so that the picture can be described.

  • The text in the caption is only to complete the photo, not to replace the photo.
  • At the time of writing text captions do not need to start with a name.

There are some tips on how to write a good caption text. Here is how to write caption text.

1. Accuracy

You have to know what you want to say. Do not write down or make judgments about the mood or mood of the people in the picture.Actually you can just write the emotion or mood on the subject in the picture, but you have to confirm it directly at the source. Also pay attention to the actions of the subject or those around the subject.

2. Don't Be Too Real

4. Showing the Subject of the Photo

Don't show the subject of the photo in a way that talks to the subject like "Hey Joe, what are you doing in front of that building?" "Hey Jane, where are you right now?" and so forth.

5. Language Style

Actually, the style of language can be adjusted to the picture shown. For example, a funny style photo can be given a funny caption text too. Photos that are serious in style or such as tables and graphs must be given a serious caption as well.

6. Identification

Identify all clearly visible people in an image. If the photo or image contains four or more people and is not a group portrait, individual identification is not required, unless one or two people are clearly the center of attention in the photo.

3) Summary Captions

“This aerial picture shows the graves of victims of the COVID-19 coronavirus at the Okunoin cemetery in Japan on August 7, 2021.”

Gambar udara ini menunjukkan kuburan korban virus corona COVID-19 di pemakaman Okunoin di Jepang pada 7 Agustus 2021.

The government will restrict foreign currency purchases following a sharp drop in the peso.
